Who are we?Hertfordshire Holly are a clog morris side who perform dances mainly in the traditional style of North West Morris. We learn our dances from festivals, workshops and other dance sides. Some of our dances, however, have been especially written by members of our side. We use belled sticks, wavers, slings and garlands in the dances, which are usually named after their place of origin such as Ashton, Walton's Parade and Albury. What do we look like?
Our dance kit reflects the holly colours of red, green, black and white. In April 2008 Hertfordshire Holly danced out as a mixed side for the first time. Both womens and mens kits are illustrated in the photographs here. back to the topWhere can you find us?The side has been based in Hertford Heath for a number of years. From 1st May we are moving to a new practice venue, the Village Hall at High Cross. Map (with arrow almost in the right place). Practice times remain 8 - 10pm on Thursday evenings unless we are dancing at a local hostelry (see the programme). During the year we perform at a variety of venues - local, nationwide and worldwide. These include fetes and pubs and larger festivals and days of dance when we dance with many other sides. Invitations take us to places such as Rochester and Sheringham, a well as Germany and France. We have even appeared on TV and have danced live on the radio! If you would like to book us for an event please contact one of the officers. In 1989 we celebrated our tenth anniversary by re-designing our red and green kit, in 1999 in honour of our twentieth anniversary we had a "Holly Holiday" in Norwich and we celebrated our 25th year with a ceilidh when 32 past and present members all danced together and a "Holly Holiday" in Shoreham-by-Sea. back to the topWant to try morris dancing?Morris dancing is not only about tradition, it is a very good form of exercise and is extremely enjoyable. Why not come along and give it a go? No previous experience required. It is aerobics, keep fit and jogging all rolled into one, but the difference is we also have a laugh! We involve the whole family and have opportunities for younger members of the family to join in. . We promote the social side of our group as much as the dancing. Practice nights, dance outs and going away for the weekend are all important to us. We welcome new dancers, musicians (both male and female) and bookings. If you would like to join us please contact one of the officers. Our practice season starts in September and we dance out mostly in the late spring and summer months. back to the top |
